When I was a child, I was strongly encouraged to pursue a distinguished career in law or sciences. My parents wanted a better life for their daughter, and the arts were not a viable option for someone growing up in a working-class household. It was with this mindset that I graduated from university with a degree in Paralegal Studies. I dedicated the early years of my career to helping clients navigate hardship and injustice. After a few years of working a desk job, however, I developed an insatiable hunger for adventure and self-growth.
In 2013, I quit my job and moved to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia to teach English on a one-year contract. I spent school holidays backpacking solo throughout Southeast Asia and making photographs with my iPhone. My eagerness to understand and connect with people of different cultures, coupled with my desire to embrace beautiful landscapes, led me to discover my natural talent for travel and photography. I returned home and completed a certificate program at the Chicago Photography Academy in 2015. So many doors opened for me as I discovered the power of creativity and the freedom of living one’s truth.
My passion is in documentary, street and portrait work. For me, photography is about telling stories. I love going deeper with my subjects on why we are photographing a particular vision or idea. I don’t shoot purely based on aesthetics or trends. Each session is a manifestation of truth and meaning. I practice this by capturing genuine moments, providing an accurate representation of my subjects, and amplifying marginalized voices. I work to create a safe, honest, and loving environment for those I photograph. The end goal is to create positive change and bring more joy and compassion to the human experience.
